Alaska is rich in mountains, glaciers, and wildlife. Its mythical title is the Final Frontier. As such, it needs protection from urges to exploit its resources - especially fossil fuels during energy shortages (for another approach to energy shortages, see www.futuretoolkit.com/newgengen.htm.)
It is sometimes argued that protecting the wilderness in Alaska is a luxury we cannot afford - especially as only a small percentage of the world's population ever visits. But that is precisely why it should be saved - as one of the few remaining places where the human footprint is small and nature holds sway.
Wildness made man but man cannot make wildness. He can only spare it. David Brower
